U. S. Civil War Negro Troops Print

TROOP WAR PHOTO, a "U.S. Negro Troop" photo or print. The print shows a troop wearing "U.S. Civil War" uniforms of the North and holding guns. It is a heavy stock paper with an antique finish. The print measures 17 inches across and 11 inches tall. During the American Revolution there were some 1,000 free and slave Negro soldiers enlisted. In the War of 1812 free Negroes from Louisiana fought with Jackson to defend New Orleans. Free Negroes tried to enlist at the beginning of the Civil War, and in September 1862 a temporary "black brigade" was raised in Cincinnati, to combat Morgan's raiders.
