Railway Express Western Railroad Badge

RAILWAY EXPRESS SPECIAL AGENT BADGE, a solid copper double die struck with silverplated antique finish Railway Express Special Agent badge that is a shield with raised circle and etched train. The badge measures 2 1/4 inches wide and has the clasp on the back to pin to a shirt. In 1850, Wells Fargo created a merger with John Butterfield, the founder of a large and successful stage line. After 1929 the company changed its name to the Railway Express Agency. This style badge was worn by the Special Agents whose job it was to ensure the safe delivery of all goods shipped through the agency.
