President FDR Cast Iron Bottle Opener

PRESIDENT FDR DEMOCRAT DONKEY, a cast iron President "FDR" Democrat braying donkey or mule barware soda or beer bottle opener. It has "FDR" in raised letters on the side. It measures 3 1/4 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches wide. By 1880 the donkey was well established as a mascot for the Democratic party. A cartoon about the Garfield-Hancock campaign in the New York Daily Graphic showed the Democratic candidate mounted on a donkey, leading a procession of crusaders. In the 1930's, along came Roosevelt who dominated the American political scene, not only during the twelve years of his presidency, but for decades afterwards. His presidency created a realignment that dominated American politics until the election of Richard Nixon in 1968.
