Western Sheriff Department Padlock

JAIL PADLOCK, an antique replica old west jailhouse "Sheriff Department" solid brass lock. The lock measures 2 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches tall and is solid brass with an antique finish. The lock is engraved with "Sheriff Department". The office of Sheriff has its origins in the 10th century England and the office reached the height of its influence under the Norman kings. In 1634, as part of Virginia's regional government structure, the office of Sheriff was established. William Stone was appointed the Sheriff of Accomac Shire, thus becoming the first Sheriff in America.
