Western Brass Gold 10 Gram Scales

BALANCE SCALES, solid brass with velvet covered box. The balance scales come with weights. It is a 10 gram scale  that has 4 gram weights which include a 5 gm., 2 - 2 gm., and a 1 gm. There are also 6 different milligram weights. The box measures 6 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide. The scales are 1 1/2 inches and  when set up is 5 1/4 inches tall. The term balance is derived from the Latin word bilanx or two-scaled. It is a simple form 2 equal arms and a central suspension the balance is one of the oldest instruments invented by man. There are surviving examples from Mesopotamia and Egypt dating back to the fifth millennium B.C.E. The device was rapidly adopted by all ancient peoples, who, in the fourth century B.C.E, began using the steelyard as well. The balance is a weighing instrument based on the lever principle. It consists of a beam oscillating around a fulcrum (generally knife-shaped) and carrying a pan at each end. Weighing involves comparing standard weights of known mass with an object of unknown mass. The deviations of the balance from equilibrium are shown by the pointer, either on a graduated scale or relative to a reference point. There are countless models of balances.
