Western 7th Cavalry Iron Lock Padlock
PADLOCK, a cast iron lock with an antique finish and 2 keys. The lock has a tag with the 7th Cavalry emblem on it, crossed swords with a 7 over an A. The lock measures 4 1/4 inches tall by 2 1/2 inches wide. A nice heavy lock for the ammunition box or gun safe. The early history of 7th Cavalry Regiment was closely tied to the movement of people and trade along the Southwest and on the Western plains. These routes, a result of perceived "manifest destiny", extended the domination of the United States into the far reaches of a largely unsettled Western plains and Southwestern territories. More and more wagon trains loaded with settlers, rolling west, were being attacked by Indians. The Army, having large areas of territory to protect, established a number of military posts at strategic locations throughout the West.
