Large Glass Advertising Counter Jar Giant Peanuts
COUNTER JAR, that is a replica of a Black Americana advertising piece. The jar is a large heavy clear glass counter jar with glass lid & plastic seal. The front has "Giant Brand" on a big peanut with a black man next to it and "Holy Cow! - Now Dat's a Giant P-Nut!" and "Salted in the Shell" as well as, "Big Bag Big Nuts". The counter jar measures 9 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches wide. Around 1900, equipment was invented for planting, cultivating, harvesting and picking peanuts from the plants, and for shelling and cleaning the kernels. With these mechanical aids, peanuts rapidly came into demand for oil, roasted and salted nuts, peanut butter and candy. George Washington Carver began his research into peanuts in 1903 at Tuskeegee Institute. Research that would lead him to discover improvements in horticulture and the development of more than 300 uses for peanuts (including shoe polish and shaving cream).
