Bureau Of Indian Affairs Police Badge
INDIAN AFFAIRS BADGE, a solid copper double die struck with silverplated antique finish Bureau of Indian Affairs Police badge that is a shield with eagle crest. The badge measures 2 1/4 inches wide and has the clasp on the back to pin to a shirt. Also known as the Department of the Interior until 1859, when it was changed to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Tom Jeffords rode into the Dragoon Mountains by himself in an effort to make peace with Cochise. The two became life long friends, as well as, blood brothers. A lasting peace was established. Cochise chose Tom Jeffords for the position of Indian Agent, and Jeffords took up the badge of office. After Cochise died, the government broke the treaty. Jeffords outraged at this treachery, resigned, and had nothing more to do with government employment.
